Sakon Nakhon is a city in the northeast region of Thailand located 647 km from Bangkok. Its population is estimated at nearly 80,000.

The city has a regional airport. To the northeast is Nong Han Lake, the largest natural lake in northeast Thailand with an area of ​​125.2 km².

Sakon Nakhon has been able to preserve ancient customs and traditions, such as the wax castle festival which takes place in October and represents an additional tourist attraction for the region.
East of Udon Thani, the province of Sakon Nakhon covers an area of ​​9,605 km². Like Udon Thani, this provincial capital is a center of commerce for the surrounding farming communities.
Geographically, the province includes the Phu Phan mountain range, where several temples hidden in the forest are places of retreat to practice meditation.
Some of these temples have become known because once stayed there monks revered for their accomplishments in the field of meditation.

There is no direct connection between Bangkok and Sakon Nakhon. Possibility to take a train from Hua Lamphong station in Bangkok to Udon Thani, then continue the journey by coach to Sakon Nakhon.

Coaches depart daily from Bangkok Bus Station Mochit 2 to Sakon Nakhon. The trip takes about 10 hours.

By car:

From Bangkok, take Highway No. 1 to Saraburi, then Highway No. 2 via Nakhon Ratchasima to Ban Phai. Then take road no. 23 to Maha Sarakham, then continue on road no. 213 via Kalasin towards Sakon Nakhon. The total distance is 647 km.
