Day 7: Chiang Mai – Flight to Bangkok - Maeklong Railway Market - Boat ride into the mangrove forests with floating monkeys – Kanchanaburi (B)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport to take an early flight to Bangkok.

Our guide has picked you up, we can start the tour reliably and safely. We head south from Bangkok by air-conditioned car to Samut Songkhram province (~80 km~1h30m). Already on the way you will see interesting things like the salt pans which are flooded with fresh sea water.

We drove to a small railway station and took a beautiful ride on the unique narrow-gauge railway that comes from Ban Laem and went to the famous Talad Rom Hoob Market or the “Umbrellas Back” market in German. As the train enters, you will experience the originality of this extraordinary market. The sun canopies on long poles are quickly retracted as the train enters and extended as it leaves, so that the sun does not shine directly into the small market as the heat is unbearable. Unique and one of a kind is the Train Market, a sensation as the train passes over the displays. We then visit the Maeklong Railway Market, which ends at the station, extensively and you get to know the rich spices and food in Thailand. Notice the variety of goods on offer here. Some you will probably not know.

Then we head into the natural area to Klong Kone to the transition from the river to the sea, where we take a traditional boat into the mangrove area. Passing the traditional wooden houses on stilts we enter the estuary area, the world of mangroves and monkeys. Afterwards we drive to our special mangrove – area, and if you like, you can plant a mangrove tree, tide permitting, ask the guide if this is possible! At low tide, you will also see shell collectors digging shells out of the muddy ground and collecting them in baskets to sell at the market. On the way back, you will be taken in by our “monkey family” with their many cute babies, who come right up to the boat. Of course we don’t miss this and watch them from a short distance.

Early in the morning at about 5.00 am, take a short drive to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat, one of the modern wonders of the world. You will then explore the site and be amazed by the sheer size of the temple and learn how the Khmer Empire prospered between the 9th and 13th centuries, around the time when Angkor Wat was built. Stroll through the intricately carved hallways that show hundreds of fine carvings and discover small shrines still in use today by the local people.

08.30 am, return to the hotel for breakfast and refreshment until lunch time – Lunch at Haven – SELF PAY

Afternoon, you will explore Angkor Thom, the ancient royal city of the Khmer Empire with its centerpiece; the Bayon temple. As you approach, you will notice the enigmatic faces of former King Jayavarman VII looking in every direction. Your guide will take you to the Terrace of the Elephants, which served as a platform from where the King could welcome back his victorious army, and the Terrace of the Leper King, which holds detailed carvings winding along a narrow passageway that leads to the Baphuon complex. End the day with Ta Prohm temple. This beautiful temple is overgrown with fig trees, giving a haunting yet exotic atmosphere. The magnificent roots of the trees have merged over the centuries with the temple’s huge stone blocks, emphasizing a ‘forgotten city’ feeling.

This evening, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant with a traditional Apsara dance show as part of our cultural experience.

Accommodation : At the hotel in Siem Reap

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 18: Siem Reap – Banteay Srei & Beng Mealea (B)

Breakfast at the hotel. Depart for Banteay Srei temple this morning. This red sandstone temple is one of Angkor’s most significant structures as its walls are decorated with elaborate carvings which have been preserved remarkably well. They provide an excellent insight into the Angkor civilization and their beliefs. It was built in the 10th century and was dedicated to the Hindu god – Shiva. Continue on a pleasant drive through the countryside to Beng Mealea, a sprawling jungle temple constructed in a distinctly Angkor Wat style by King Jayavarman II in the early 12th century. It preceded and may have served as a prototype for Angkor Wat. Contrary to Angkor, few carvings or bas-reliefs are evident. Today the temple is largely overrun by vegetation and the stone walls are crumbling which adds to its charm in a unique way. Accessibility has improved as elevated walkways have been set up throughout most of the temple, although to see all corners does require a sense of adventure as you will need to climb over stone blocks or walk through narrow passageways.

Lunch is on your own account then drive back to your hotel in Siem Reap with about 1.5 hours.

Accommodation : At the hotel in Siem Reap

    Meals: Breakfast,

  • Day 19: Siem Reap- Tonle Sap Lake – Depart (B)

Today is my last day in Cambodia. We will spend our last morning visiting the Chong Kneas Floating Village on Tonle Sap Lake and take a boat trip to see daily life in the village. The natural wonder of Tonle Sap offers an insight into the old tradition of riparian life and the natural splendor of the countryside and is followed by an Artisan D’angkor workshop before transferring to the airport for your flight home.
