Chiang Saen

Chiang Saen is a small district of Chiang Rai province and the Ancient City of Chiang Saen is one of the oldest settlements in the Kingdom of Thailand. It is located along the Mekong River. The residents of Chiang Saen have a very easy-going and peaceful lifestyle. Many of the residents live nearby one of the hundreds of ancient structures that once graced this city.

History

The government intends to promote Chiang Sean as a business hub and as a part of the significant international development initiative known as the “Greater Maekong Sub-Region,” which is driving the deep social, political, and economic change that this town is currently experiencing. This is owing to the region’s rapidly expanding tourism industry (GMS).
The first settlement here dates to the Neolithic period, according to archaeological discoveries. The Lawa came far earlier than Tai migrants in the 13th century, who arrived more subsequently. The city, which was formerly known as Wiang Hiran Nakhon Ngoen Yang, is documented in records that are dated to the 14th century. According to his grandfather Mengrai’s orders, King Saen Pu constructed it in 1328. The city once had 76 temples inside its gates and another 63 outside.
Chiang Saen is still home to a number of abandoned temples and lonely residential roads. All of this is enclosed inside old brick ramparts that are in decent condition. Be aware that many of the temples are not in the best of shape. They frequently consist merely of headless Buddhas, brick mounds, and chedis that have been cut off.

Weather

It doesn’t really matter what time of year you visit, we’d say. Late February to late April marks the start of the hot and dry season, which is followed by rains from May through October. It’s dry and chilly from November through February. For its potential for birdwatching, Chiang Saen Lake is the only location that is a seasonal location. During the northern winter, a lot of birds migrate here, and it is busier from November to March.

How to get there

Every evening between 16:30 and 17:00, Sombat Tour offers 958 baht VIP Bangkok buses to the Mor Chit bus terminal. On weekends and during holidays, a second 17:30 one runs. About midway between the river and Wat Chedi Luang, their office is located on the main street next to the Krungthai Bank.
The Green Bus Company offers frequent air-conditioned services between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai for 205 baht. The normal location, on Phaholyothin by the municipal market, is where the ticket counter and bus stop are.
