History
The Phra Pathom Chedi, a historic religious building in the province, was the first place of worship in Thailand to signify the arrival of Buddhism. Along with its wide variety of fruits, Nakhon Pathom is well known for its delectable cuisine.
The city thrived when it was formerly located by the sea and was a part of the Dvaravati civilization. Archaeological discoveries indicate that Nakhon Pathom was the first city to have Buddhist and Indian cultural influences. It is thought that the city was a hub of civilization at that time based on the Phra Pathom Chedi and other remnants found in the city region. In Nakhon Pathom, people of many races settled.
