Khao Rang Viewpoint
Khao Rang Viewpoint, also known as Rang Hill Viewpoint, stands out as one of Phuket‘s most renowned vantage points. This charming spot offers unparalleled vistas to the south, stretching across the island’s main city and extending all the way to the distant Big Buddha, perched atop the hills. In addition to this breathtaking scenery, you can also catch glimpses of the lush, verdant islands dotting Phuket’s eastern coast.
At the heart of the viewpoint lies a stunning open pagoda, leading to a spacious viewing platform at the hill’s edge, thoughtfully equipped with guardrails for safety. The entire area is embraced by well-maintained gardens and mature rubber trees, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and a seamless blend with nature. To complement the experience, a handful of charming cafes can be found nearby, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the fantastic panorama while savoring delightful refreshments.
View from Khao Rang Viewpoint
Khao Rang Viewpoint offers a captivating panorama mainly facing south and east, while the hills forming the backbone of Phuket create a natural boundary to the right (west). Gazing straight ahead, you’ll be treated to a sight of the charming older streets of Phuket Town, extending towards the distant Chalong Bay on the horizon. To the left of your view, the Panwa peninsula gracefully stretches down, and if you look carefully, you can catch a glimpse of Koh Lon in the far distance.
This delightful and serene site serves as a perfect getaway, and the journey up to the viewpoint is dotted with other attractions, adding to its allure. Popular among both tourists and locals, Khao Rang Viewpoint beckons sightseers and visitors seeking a pleasant spot for a relaxing picnic amidst the beauty of Phuket’s landscape.
How to get there
Khao Rang Hill is a quick 10-minute drive from Old Phuket Town and approximately 25 minutes from Patong Beach. The road to the top, whether from the north or south route, is via Khaw Sim Bee Road—a well-maintained and adequately wide two-lane road.
To reach Rang Hill Viewpoint on foot, head to the intersection of Mae Luan Road and Patiphat Road at the outskirts of the old town. From there, take Khaw Sim Bee Road north, following the signs for Rang Hill or the hilltop restaurants. The road is quiet, and you’ll know you’re on the right path when you pass by a large stationery shop.
The sidewalk is available for the first half of the walk, but it disappears after reaching Wat Khao Rang Samakkhitham. There are two roads to choose from, both leading to the same place. We recommend taking the paved route on the left for easier navigation. Look for a restaurant and a sign with deer on your left, and then you’ll find stone stairs leading to the Mueang Phuket Exercise Park, where Rang Hill Viewpoint is situated. Follow the stairs as they curve to the left, and you’ll arrive near the souvenir shops, with Phuket City View Point just beyond them.

Great, Panoramic Views – enhanced by the extended viewing platform

My wife and myself are back in Phuket on our annual visit (a pattern repeated every year since the terrible Tsunami in 2004) and yesterday evening we went with some local friends to Khao Rang Hill View Point which – particularly with the new (I say new but built since my last visit some 10 years ago!) – has great views of Phuket Town and the surrounding islands;
A great attraction – especially for first time visitors who should also stay on for some excellent Thai cuisine at the nearby Tunk-Ka Cafe which will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary next year!
Finally, keep an eye out for any friendly monkeys in the car park!
