Things to do in Erawan National Park

Erawan Waterfalls

Erawan-Waterfalls

Erawan Falls is conveniently located on the eastern side of the park, within walking distance from the parking area near the visitor center. The name “Erawan” is derived from the top tier of the waterfall, which is believed to resemble a three-headed white elephant from Hindu mythology.

What sets Erawan Falls apart and contributes to its popularity is the enchanting emerald green clarity of its waters. While it may not be the largest or widest waterfall in the country, it exudes a unique charm that captivates visitors.

The waterfall comprises seven major tiers and several smaller ones. A system of trails and footbridges allows easy access to all tiers, with the exception of the seventh tier. To reach the topmost tier, adventurous individuals can scramble up a few cliffs, providing an extra thrill for those seeking a challenge. Recently, a concrete path has been constructed to enhance safety during wet conditions.

The total distance from the trailhead to the highest tier is nearly 1.5 kilometers. Along the trails, visitors will encounter numerous emerald green ponds, inviting them to take a refreshing swim. These ponds are teeming with fish, creating a unique aquatic experience.

The first two tiers of Erawan Falls are easily accessible to most people, and there are picnic spots with benches for those who wish to relax and enjoy the surroundings. However, it’s important to note that food is strictly prohibited beyond the second tier. Visitors are required to leave their food and bottles at a designated checkpoint, where a small deposit is collected. This deposit can be reclaimed on the way back.

Phra That Cave

Phra That Cave, situated approximately 12 kilometers northwest of the visitor center at Erawan Falls, offers an intriguing cave exploration opportunity. The cave spans a length of 544 meters, with an entrance that measures 15 meters wide and 8-10 meters high.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by an impressively spacious first chamber, which stands about 40 meters tall and spans a width of 90 by 50 meters. The cave showcases a fascinating display of stalactites and stalagmites, while also serving as a habitat for bats deeper within its chambers.

Wang Badan Cave

To reach this cave, you will need to access it from the opposite side of the National Park, located behind the Saiyok Waterfall. Begin your journey by heading towards the guard house situated at the western end of the park. From there, you will need to hike approximately 1.5 kilometers to reach Wang Badan Cave.

Wang Badan Cave is characterized by two distinct levels. The upper level is adorned with numerous stalactites hanging from the ceiling, creating a captivating spectacle. On the other hand, the lower level of the cave boasts an underground stream, adding an element of intrigue to the cave exploration.

Rua Cave

A significant attraction within Erawan National Park is Rua Cave, which draws visitors primarily to witness the intriguing burials of an ancient civilization. The cave is renowned for its collection of ancient coffins, constructed by hollowing out trees. Located on the southern end of the park, Rua Cave can be reached by embarking on a 1-kilometer hike through the forest from the nearby village of Ban Thap Sila.

Hiking Trails

Erawan-National-Park-Hiking-Trails

Erawan National Park is home to hidden treasures in the form of captivating hiking trails, yet many remain unaware of their existence. Among these trails is a delightful 1-kilometer path that winds through a lush bamboo forest. This trail, which provides an alternate route to the famous Erawan Falls, is easily navigable and suitable for hikers of all skill levels.

For the adventurous souls seeking a more exhilarating experience, the Hin Lan Pee Nature Trail awaits. Stretching across 5 kilometers, this trail offers a thrilling journey that typically takes 2 to 3 hours to complete. However, it’s important to note that embarking on this trail necessitates the guidance of a knowledgeable local to navigate its challenging terrain.

Opening hours and Entrance fees

Erawan National Park welcomes visitors daily from 8 AM until 4:30 PM throughout the year, including public holidays. Although the park’s official closing time is 4:30 pm, the park rangers begin their trail cleaning process from the top tier at around 3 PM. As they gradually move down, tier by tier, visitors are kindly asked to leave the park. Depending on the speed of the cleaning process, the lower tiers may remain open until 5 PM.

The entrance fees for Erawan National Park are as follows:

  • Foreign adults are required to pay 300 THB, while children between the ages of 3 and 14 are charged 200 THB. Thai citizens enjoy discounted rates, with adults paying 60 Baht and children paying 30 THB.
  • The ticket prices for vehicles: 20 THB for a motorbike and 30 THB for a car.

How to get there

Erawan National Park is about 50 km from Kanchanaburi and is easily accessible by songtaew, motorcycle or by bus.

  • Songtaew – Songtaews depart from the Kanchanaburi bus station, located in the city center. A songtaew usually costs 1,000 THB for a round trip. This is an excellent price when split by a group of up to 10 people.
  • Motorcycle – Riding a motorcycle from Kanchanaburi is my favorite option. The ride takes about an hour and gives you total flexibility. Motorcycles can be rented for 300 THB per day in Kanchanaburi.
  • Bus – A bus runs directly between Kanchanaburi and Erawan National Park. It leaves from Kanchanaburi Bus Station every hour from 8:00am to 5:00pm. It takes about 1 hour each way and costs only 45 THB. It also returns to Kanchanaburi every hour.

Stunning waterfalls with a free spa treatment
Nov 2022 • Solo
This park is stunning. I only did 2 waterfalls because I was having so much fun with the little fish eating the dead skin off my feet at the 2nd one.

I hired a motorbike and drove myself. Gosh it was a long drive, took me about 1.5 hours each way. It was incredibly easy to get there, literally one road until the very end when you turn into the park.

I arrived at 2:30pm (they close at 4:30pm) it so wasn’t enough time. I wish I had made a whole day of it and did all of the waterfalls.

Life jackets for hire 2 hours at 20 baht.

I went on a Friday and there was a lot of people but not so much so that it ruined the experience.

Less crowd, but a attractive place
Jun 2021 • Family
Erawan National Park is a less crowded place like Phuket, Pataya etc. But if you want to enjoy true Thailand, this park isa good choice. It’s a hilly area and enjoy the nature without any interruption. Seven steps waterfall is the main attraction of the park. And Don’t forget about the pedicure by the doctor fish. Night stay with reasonable price is available here. It’s not costly place like Bangkok.
