Phuket Big Buddha Statue

Known among Thais as Buddha Phra Puttamingmongkol Akenakkiri, the main statue was built in 2004 and measures 25 metres in diameter at the base. The entire body is made of reinforced concrete, covered in a beautiful Burmese white jade marble that glistens in the sunlight. The views and the image itself are breathtaking.

Beside Phuket’s main Buddha stands a smaller, gold-colored Buddha statue, although actually made of 20 tons of brass. There are also several much smaller statues of Buddha and revered monks.

Useful tips for visiting Phuket Big Buddha

Being a religious site, the Phuket Big Buddha commands a level of respect in terms of attire. It is deemed inappropriate to visit the site while dressed in beachwear, short skirts, or T-shirts bearing offensive texts or images. To honor the sacredness of the place, visitors are encouraged to dress modestly.

If, upon arrival, you find that your attire may be considered too daring, there’s no need to worry. You can easily request a sarong from the site center to cover up appropriately. These sarongs are provided free of charge, allowing all visitors to adhere to the respectful dress code while exploring this revered destination.

Don’t miss the Big Buddha

We were fortunate to start our day here when the visitors were low. The Buddha is magnificent and the views around the island are stunning. We were able to participate in a 7 minute meditation practice and other rituals. This temple makes it very accessible to participate and learn about Buddist practices.

Impressive land mark with incredible views. Not too many steps to top. Construction going on inside but for $15 you can have your name put on a tile and goes on inside wall, pays toward cost of renovation. Free to get in, walk around. Well worth it.
