History of Wat Nang Sao

Wat-Nang-Sao-History

During a conflict in Burma, a group of Thais immigrated along the Tha Chin River. The elderly and the women hid in the ancient Phra Ubosot. Later, the Thais helped each other fight the Burmese troops and win the war. Immigrants then settled in the area.

Among them, 2 sisters who had once taken refuge in Phra Ubosot, had the idea of renovating it. However, the eldest realized that the temple was too damaged, so he built a new one in its place. But, the younger sister would like to do as promised that if they survived, they would have the temple renovated.

Hence, she completed the renovation and named it “Wat Phrommachari”. Over time, it came to be known as “Wat Nong Sao.” Presently, it is referred to as “Wat Nang Sao”.

Highlights of Wat Nang Sao

Wat Nang Sao is first and foremost a historical temple, as evidenced by its Ubosot, beautifully restored on the outside with stucco bas-reliefs where the color blue dominates.
Among its features, you’ll note the presence of a single entrance and no windows, hence its name: Bot Maha Ut. According to the information panel, this is a popular piece of architecture from the Ayutthaya era, with only a few similar buildings having survived the centuries.

Dark inside despite the lamps, this ordination hall is nonetheless sublime thanks to its gilded murals. Add to this the various Buddhas housed at the back of the hall, and this Ubosot, a true architectural and religious heritage, possesses a unique charm.

At Wat Nong Sao, you won’t have missed it, there’s also a huge Viharn, but it’s not always accessible. On its sides, two identical pavilions house sacred Buddhas. The one on the left as you look at the building in front is home to Luang Po Paleilai, a seated Buddha depicted as he receives an offering from an elephant and a monkey.

On the right, the second pavilion houses Luang Po Dam, or the Black Buddha. About two meters high in the seated position, he slowly but surely transforms into a beautiful golden Buddha thanks to the gold leaves conscientiously applied to his body.

Wat Nang Sao is situated in Tambon Tha Mai. To reach the temple, you can take Highway No. 35 (Thon Buri-Pak Tho) and continue onto Highway No. 3091 for approximately 5 kilometers. Then, make a left turn into Soi Wat Nang Sao 2 and drive for about 1 kilometer.
