Railay Beach
With its limestone formations, pristine beaches and lush jungles straight out of a postcard, Railay is a fairytale preserved in the isolation of high limestone cliffs that separate it from the mainland province of Krabi.
Accessible only by boat, Railay first came to prominence when backpackers and hippies discovered it in the 1970s. Today, it’s one of Thailand’s most popular destinations thanks to its hidden location and laid-back atmosphere.
Best attractions in Railay Beach
A host of fantastic experiences await you at Railay Beach. Nestled on this small peninsula, you’ll discover not one, but 4 exquisite beaches, a host of captivating attractions and the chance to embark on delightful excursions and take part in a plentiful choice of activities. Here’s a brief overview of Railay’s most breathtaking activities:
1. Railay Beach West
Nestled in Krabi, Railay Beach West is an undeniable paradise and one of the jewels of the peninsula. With its fine sandy shores and the rare presence of rocks or coral in the water, the sea is the perfect place for a splendid swim. During the day, the sky offers breathtaking sunsets, while in high season, evenings are enhanced by bewitching open fires. Along the shore, you’ll find a selection of restaurants and bars where you can relax and enjoy the sea view.
2. Railay Beach East
To the east of the island lies the enchanting Railay Beach East. This part of the coastline has an idyllic charm, but is not ideal for swimming. The ocean slope is particularly gradual and, at low tide, the waters recede for hundreds of meters. On the other hand, the landscape is full of greenery and the dense mangrove forests offer a truly captivating spectacle. What’s more, Railay Beach East offers plenty of quality, affordable accommodation options. Intimate restaurants, charming bars adorned with hammocks and a modest seafront promenade for leisurely strolls all contribute to its appeal.
3. Phra Nang Beach
Phra Nang beach on Railay is a must-see, an example of the region’s dreamy shores. Renowned for its remarkable rock formations and picturesque allure, it has rightfully claimed its place among Thailand’s most renowned coastal destinations. The entire beach resembles a storybook scene, with the iconic rocky islet featured on every Krabi postcard. The beach’s powdery, sugary sand is a sight to behold, where inviting turquoise waters entice visitors to frolic, swim and snorkel. Kindly tropical trees generously offer shady refuges and, for those who wish to indulge, seaside massages offer the added luxury of a sea view.
4. Phra Nang Cave
Phra Nang Cave, also known as Princess Cave, is a remarkable sight on Railay. Nestled at the end of Phra Nang beach, it is a rocky cavern of exceptional character. This revered space, surrounded by formidable limestone formations, is home to a sanctuary dedicated to fertility. A number of wooden and stone phalluses are placed here as offerings, with the aim of realizing the hopes of offspring and prosperity. The rock faces are majestic, and observers can see climbers reaching astonishing heights.
How to get to Railay Beach
The best way to reach Railay beach is by boat from Ao Nang or Krabi town. The island is isolated from the mainland by dense jungle and towering limestone cliffs, making the sea the only means of access. Long-tail boats run several times an hour, making the journey in around 15 minutes. The price is usually between 100 and 150 baht. Tickets can be purchased at Ao Nang pier, Ao Nam Mao pier or Krabi town pier.
